It is known that you can be a villain or as a hero. Christian Bale is now a villain again, this time in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Strong antagonist. The plot follows the comic book storyline and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. There’s, of course, the wacky humour so unique to director Taika Waititi. However, Love and Thunder, while being a great standalone , doesn’t compare to the previous Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been an integral part the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his standalone films either missed the mark entirely or didn’t hit the bullseye. Although the origins story of Thor (2011) was a decent start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was terrible entry. Yet, any list of top five MCU films would contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) absolutely. There was a lot of anticipation ahead of the movie’s release because of the returning of the Hemsworth/Taika Warwick collaboration.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), god who seeks to wipe out all gods hits New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god-killer by joining with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend, who is now Mighty Thor. The movie is straightforward and straightforward, which is unlike Marvel’s previous movies. The acting is favorable. Hemsworth is the main character, who’s in an emotional crisis in his midlife. However, Bale and Portman are outstanding. For proof of Bale’s skills in the scene before the title credit can be seen. Gorr could be the new Thanos within the MCU. Bale adds a some eerieness to his character , but not much else.
On the other one hand, Portman, who makes her return into the Marvel world following her absence from the two previous Thor films, will play the cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend who was chosen by Mjolnir. Given how Marvel is eager to hand over the roles of Hawkeye and in a few months, Hulk, to women characters, I initially expected the Mighty Thor to be a identical tick mark on the representation checklist. But, the film sets an emotional backstory for this scientist who gets to showcase her biceps in multiple scenes.
Marvel also performs its own stretching out in all its appearances. In addition to the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also known as Hela and the director of an Asgardian play. Waititi has since Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his most loved genre. It’s hilarious to watch an image of a couple of noisy goats and Korg’s narration on Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie is Old Spice’s spokesperson.
The central theme is that Thor desires his Mjolnir but is afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags work, but they come at the cost of deep emotion. They also reveal the superficial plot. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with many types affection, from father-daughter relationships to complex relationships between estranged lovers… There’s a connection between Gorr losing respect towards Rapu and Thor becoming disillusioned at Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). It’s all great ideas, but…
There are numerous movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, and also Easter eggs. There’s a photo of the god that died, Falligar, taken straight from comics. We can see Hemsworth dressed in the original Thor costumes that comic book fans will recognise. When he is fighting Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We are also shown a tattoo of “RIP Loki and the costume of the trickster etched on the back of our Viking. We’re introduced the villainous Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to possess the ability to think for themselves and are able to control their own minds, it’s interesting to observe other weapons being demonstrated to have the ability to control individuals.
This has been seen with the ten rings in Shang Chi, the magical Bangle from Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade in the post-credits scene in Eternals. The quote “Gods do not empower you however, they will utilize your power” from the new Marvel show, Moonknight, feels very relatable. There’s also a little bit about Valkyrie losing her beloved partner in war and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
We’re reminded of Ragnarok’s color palette in the beginning part, but much of the second half is set in the dark world of black and white. Action scenes that are monochrome can be very satisfying but it is imperative to remember.
Hemsworth as Thor is staying for the foreseeable future, and it’s an immense relief to MCU fans who’ve seen the original Avengers either sacrifice their lives, or hang up their boots.
